Of course not having to wait or pay for delivery should never be the deciding factor in the French software you choose - but it is very convenient!

Let's look at our two favourites in a bit of detail:
 

Rocket French

Rocket French is to our mind the best French language software currently available - regardless of price.

That's a strong statement to make, I know, but when you look at what's included and the remarkably low price we think most people will come to the same conclusion.

This is really great software, it's how you hope computers and people work together.

This is modern interactive French language software so you get interactivity and hours and hours of audio lessons (and they're in MP3 so you can copy them to a player and use them away from your computer, anywhere you like). It's involving and challenging but works on lots of levels so if you're a complete beginner it won't scare you off but if you've learned a bit like we had it still have plenty to teach. Here are just a few of the highlights:

• It's got illustrated grammar lessons with literally thousands of sound tracks to help you get to grips with what is often the most difficult aspect of learning French.
   
• It's got a word game called "Megavocab" based on the very successful flashcard technique but interactive. This will help you learn French words.
   
• "Megaudio" helps you quickly get a handle on how French actually sounds, real French pronunciation made easier.
   
• There's also the "Magaverb" game and even a "Members Only" forum where you can get your questions answered almost as if you has your own private tutor.

The whole lot comes with text files as well so if you want to read through as well you can do so.

Rocket French claims to be able to make you confident in the French language in eight weeks. We already knew some French so it's not a fair test but I can see why they would make the claim - which is pretty amazing if you think about it. From complete beginner to confident in French in two months? Surefire French

Having said that Rocket French is our favourite we can't ignore Surefire French, which is an excellent budget option.

At around a third of the price, you might want to give it some consideration. It's certainly a program that will give you a good start.

Surefire claim you can learn French in just 20 minutes per day - which of course is perfectly true, just depends how quickly you want to learn!

Their technique is another way of doing flashcards which we all now is a very sucessful teaching method that has now been adapted to computer technology. With these lesson you play their French matching game and French flashcard game with French and English words and phrases. All very relaxed and simple.

They support this with two a memory boosting report and daily memory booster game designed to improve your memory in general. The principle here being that if you can remember more you'll learn quicker. You could also see it as a benefit to your overall ability to retain information.

The Surefire system to learn French is certainly not the comprehensive program that is provided by Rocket French but it will give you a good foundation and at the moment it is only $37.00.
